Styling and Redesign

One of the best parts about custom upholstery is the ability to redesign the overall look of a piece.

My process is to strip each piece down to the frame and then rebuild. I do this to ensure structural integrity, and to create a finished product that will stand the test of time. Some clients prefer to recreate the exact look of the original piece, but many want to make changes - and are surprised by what is possible!

Consider this ottoman:

Ottoman frames tend to be pretty basic, so you typically have a LOT of styling options. This one went from overstuffed with deep buttons, to a much more sleek diamond tufted version with a tack band.

In this next one, you can see how my client and I chose to keep the foam more angular than curved, giving it a much more modern look. We left the fringe off, but added two large buttons in a contrasting pattern to add some visual interest and a bit of fun.

Another redesign option to consider is upholstering over exposed frames. For this side chair, my client asked to upholster over the back for added comfort, but leave the carved edge exposed.

Arm fronts are another place where many chairs have potential for big stylistic changes. I tend to avoid large pleats, which can collect dust and debris, and can over time lose their crispness.

Here, I did small radial pleats and a custom cap:

Another option is to sew the inside arm material directly to the front of the arm:

I love the tailored look of this style, and the simplicity of the design allows the fabric to take center stage.

And speaking of, remember that the sky is the limit when it comes to fabric application! Here are three different designs (and the final result) I did for a pair of armchairs last summer:

I love working with my clients throughout the design and production process. Together, we can make your furniture dreams come true!
